We had the pleasure of enjoying a wonderful evening of friends, food, familiar memories, and fantastic music while attending an intimate, yet dynamic Private House Concert by Rodeo & Juliet.

The concert was hosted by a generous friend who offered her lovely home’s patio for an unforgettable evening. The temperature cooled nicely and the intentional soft glow of the landscape and patio lighting provided the perfect relaxed but attentive setting.

The amazingly talented duo of Chris & Jan Harris—Rodeo & Juliet—their name alone suggests contrast and character and offers a glimpse in what to expect. Maybe a sense of dust and romance, grit and feeling, and open-road charm. In a private home setting, that kind of musical personality has room to breathe and be seen. We saw it.

The duo are in Montrose to establish and promote their, Nashville on the Western Slope, endeavor in hopes of bringing a bit of Nashville to Colorado’s western slope.

With their over fifty-year career in Nashville, they are doing just that.

I’m always grateful when the Lord blesses me with bayou moments in the mountains. Moments that capture my Southern heritage and my tagline, Where the Bayous Meet the Mountains. The concert gave me a couple of those moments.

Their tribute to Carole King and James Taylor took me back to those awkward teenage years growing up on the bayous of South Louisiana with my books and my music. Carole King and James Taylor’s songs played into the melancholy of those years sitting on my grandparent’s front porch (because on the bayou, the front of the house faces the bayou) while the lazy bayou idled by. The small radio’s poor reception couldn’t negate the remarkable voice and lyrics of James Taylor. The pond next to my friend’s patio reminded me of that lazy bayou. I was transported.

To accompany them, the husband-and-wife duo brought in a local keyboard player, Alison Malone and another guitarist. BUT…not just any guitarist. We were graced with the talent of multi-Grammy and Dove winning, Bruce Carroll.

Their bold harmonious voices offered a powerful tribute to the iconic songwriters.

It was a live performance built around presence, warmth, and the rare feeling that everyone in the room was part of the same story. There were seniors of various age levels who remembered the words. That’s something to celebrate in our advancing ages.

One friend jokingly commented,

"I can’t remember what I had for lunch yesterday, but I can remember all the words to these songs."

The night worked. Because it was simple.

Good songs.

Good company.

Comfortable space.

People who appreciated the music.

Those pieces came together making the evening more than entertainment.

And while there was a twinge of sadness when the evening ended, the whole experience gave each of us a special memory to carry home.
